The destruction of a critical supply road into Yemen’s besieged city of Taizz has raised serious concerns about civilian safety and access to essential goods. Human Rights Watch reported on 26 October that Houthi forces used explosives to severely damage the Hayjat al-Abd road on 18 October, disrupting a route used to bring food, medicine, and fuel into the city.

Taizz has faced a Houthi siege since 2015. Road closures have already restricted residents’ freedom of movement, obstructed humanitarian access, and made essential supplies harder to obtain. Damaging one of the remaining major supply routes adds to the hardship of a population already struggling with the consequences of prolonged conflict.

For civilians, a road is more than transport infrastructure. It connects families to hospitals, markets, work, and humanitarian assistance. When that connection is destroyed, patients may struggle to reach treatment, essential goods become harder to deliver, and vulnerable households face greater uncertainty.

Human Rights Watch warned that the attack could amount to a war crime if it was intended to deny civilians access to objects indispensable to their survival. That legal assessment requires investigation, but the immediate need is clear: civilians must retain safe access to food, water, medicine, and essential services.

All parties to the conflict must protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian relief. Safe access routes should be restored urgently, and the circumstances of the attack should be independently investigated. Governments with influence over the parties must press for civilian protection and accountability rather than allowing these harms to become another overlooked consequence of Yemen’s war.

As Rights Defenders Initiative (RDI), we strongly condemn attacks that endanger civilians by cutting access to essential supplies and services. Depriving communities of the means to survive is wrong and contrary to fundamental humanitarian principles. We call for the urgent restoration of safe access to Taizz, unhindered humanitarian assistance, and an independent investigation into the destruction of the Hayjat al-Abd road. Civilians must never be made to bear the cost of military pressure through hunger, isolation, or the denial of medical care.
