In the aftermath of Tanzania’s 2025 general elections, reports of widespread violence have sparked renewed concern over serious human rights violations. According to a 19 March 2026 report by Human Rights Watch, security forces opened fire not only on protesters but also on bystanders with no involvement in demonstrations. The report highlights that civilians who were merely present at the scene were among those killed and injured, pointing to an apparent failure to distinguish between peaceful individuals and perceived threats.
The pre-election period had already been marked by mounting pressure on opposition groups, restrictions on freedom of expression, and instances of arbitrary detention. In the post-election climate, international observers, including experts affiliated with United Nations, have warned of “widespread and systematic” abuses. Reports indicate that security forces used live ammunition during protests, and some sources suggest that the true number of casualties may be significantly higher than officially acknowledged. Additional investigations by independent organizations and media outlets further indicate attempts to obscure evidence and limit public scrutiny.
These developments point to serious violations of fundamental rights, including the right to life, freedom of assembly, and access to justice. As Rights Defenders, we call on the Tanzanian government to conduct independent and transparent investigations into the actions of security forces, and we urge the international community to increase pressure to ensure accountability. A full and impartial clarification of these events, the prosecution of those responsible, and meaningful remedies for victims remain essential steps toward restoring the rule of law and preventing future abuses.
