On Recent Human Rights Violations in Gaza and Israel

The recent events in Gaza and Israel have witnessed a significant escalation of human rights violations. The ongoing conflict has resulted in immense suffering and loss of life for both Palestinians and Israelis. Various international organizations and media outlets have documented these violations extensively. This article aims to provide a summary of the key human rights violations that have occurred in Gaza and Israel, as reported by credible sources.

Violence and Loss of Life

According to reports, both Israeli forces and Palestinian armed terrorist groups have committed grave violations of international humanitarian law. Israeli forces have conducted airstrikes and other military operations in Gaza, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

The use of white phosphorus fired by artillery in civilian areas both in Gaza City and in rural areas along the Israel-Lebanon border has been documented by international organizations. The use of white phosphorus in densely populated areas is considered high risk and unlawful due to the harm it can cause to civilians. On the other hand, Palestinian armed terrorist groups have indiscriminately launched rocket attacks against Israeli cities, resulting in loss of life and injury to Israeli civilians.

Violation of International Law

The use of violence and force in a manner that disregards the principles of distinction and proportionality is a clear violation of international humanitarian law. It falls within the scope of a variety of war crimes committed by both Israeli forces and Palestinian armed terrorist groups, including deliberate shootings of civilians, hostage-taking, and indiscriminate attacks. Both parties have an obligation under international law to protect civilians and take all feasible precautions to minimize harm to them.

Humanitarian Crisis

The ongoing conflict has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation, particularly in Gaza. The Israeli blockade, in place for 16 years, has led to a severe shortage of essential supplies such as food, water, electricity, petrol, and medicine. The closure of Gaza and the starvation of its civilian population are considered war crimes under international humanitarian law. The blockade has led to a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, affecting the lives of two million Palestinians and preventing access to basic necessities and medical aid.

Accountability and the Way Forward

The international community has a moral and legal responsibility to ensure accountability for the human rights violations committed during the conflict. The International Criminal Court is currently investigating the situation in Palestine, and it holds the potential to provide justice and redress for victims. It is imperative that all parties to the conflict cooperate fully with the investigation and refrain from further violations. Additionally, there is a need for a just and lasting peace agreement that addresses the root causes of the conflict, including the occupation, apartheid, and the blockade.

Recent human rights violations in Gaza and Israel have caused great suffering and loss of life for both Palestinians and Israelis. The use of violence and force in violation of international humanitarian law is unacceptable and must be condemned by the international community. As Rights Defenders, our opinion is that efforts should be made to ensure accountability for these violations and to achieve a just and lasting peace that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals in the region.
