Challenging Living Conditions of Refugees in Eastern Sudan

In Eastern Sudan, the situation for refugees is marked by significant challenges and complexities. Many refugees in this region have fled conflict, persecution, and economic hardship from neighbouring countries such as Eritrea, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. They often arrive in Eastern Sudan seeking safety and basic necessities, yet find themselves in a precarious state due to limited resources and infrastructure. The region’s semi-arid climate exacerbates their plight, making access to clean water, adequate food, and shelter a daily struggle.

Humanitarian organizations play a crucial role in providing assistance to refugees in Eastern Sudan, but their efforts are frequently strained due to funding shortages and logistical difficulties. The refugee camps in this region, such as those near Kassala and Gedaref, often exceed their capacity, leading to overcrowded conditions and insufficient services. Education and healthcare facilities are stretched thin, impacting the well-being and future prospects of refugee children and families.

Despite these challenges, the refugees in Eastern Sudan demonstrate resilience and a determination to rebuild their lives. Many engage in informal economies or agricultural work within and around the camps, striving for self-sufficiency amidst adversity. Local communities, though themselves resource-constrained, often extend gestures of solidarity, offering support and integration opportunities where possible.

As Rights Defenders, we highlight the protracted nature of displacement in Eastern Sudan and the urgent need for sustained international support and diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of the problem and ensure a dignified future for all displaced people in the region.
