Enduring Injustice: The Ordeal of Alzheimer’s Patient Ibrahim Gungor in Turkish Prison

Ibrahim Gungor, an 72-year-old Alzheimer’s patient, has been subjected to severe human rights violations during his imprisonment in Turkey. Despite his advanced age and deteriorating health, Gungor remains incarcerated, highlighting the Turkish authorities’ disregard for the well-being of critically ill prisoners. Reports indicate that he has been denied access to adequate medical care, exacerbating his condition and raising serious ethical concerns.

The broader context of Gungor’s case reflects systemic issues within Turkiye’s prison system. Human rights organizations have documented widespread mistreatment of inmates, including overcrowding, insufficient healthcare, and inhumane treatment. A report by the Lawyers for Freedom Association revealed that prisoners often face arbitrary punishments, denial of medical access, and unsanitary conditions, all of which contribute to the deterioration of inmates’ health and violate fundamental human rights.

Despite international criticism and calls for reform, the Turkish government has been slow to address these issues. As Rights Defenders, we emphasize the need for the authorities to urgently take the necessary steps to protect the rights and dignity of all detainees in Turkiye, as the detention of defenseless individuals like İbrahim Güngör continues.Ensuring access to proper medical care and humane treatment is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative that the Turkish authorities must uphold.
