Unfolding Tragedy: Human Rights Violations Against Rohingya and Rakhine in Myanmar

The human rights situation in Myanmar, particularly concerning the Rohingya and Rakhine communities, has been dire and deeply troubling. The Rohingya, a Muslim minority group predominantly residing in Rakhine State, have faced systematic discrimination and persecution for decades. The Myanmar government, which is predominantly Buddhist, has denied them citizenship and stripped them of basic rights, labeling them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. This denial of identity and citizenship has subjected the Rohingya to severe restrictions on their movement, access to education, and healthcare, exacerbating their vulnerability.

The situation escalated dramatically in August 2017 when a coordinated attack by the Rohingya insurgent group ARSA on police posts led to a brutal military crackdown by Myanmar’s armed forces. The response was marked by extreme violence, including mass killings, sexual violence, and widespread arson. The military’s operations led to the destruction of thousands of Rohingya homes and villages, forcing over 700,000 Rohingya to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. This exodus created a dire humanitarian crisis in refugee camps, with displaced individuals enduring harsh conditions and limited access to essential services.

In addition to the Rohingya crisis, the Rakhine community, who are predominantly Buddhist and live in the same state, have also faced repercussions from the conflict. Tensions between the Rohingya and Rakhine communities have been exacerbated by the violence and instability, leading to social divisions and sporadic clashes. The conflict has strained local resources and created an environment of distrust and hostility. The Rakhine state itself has been under heavy security restrictions, impacting all residents’ daily lives and exacerbating the suffering of both communities.

International responses to the crisis have included condemnation from human rights organizations and calls for accountability, yet tangible progress remains limited. Myanmar’s military and government officials have largely denied accusations of human rights abuses and resisted international pressure. Efforts to achieve justice and reconciliation for the Rohingya and to address the grievances of the Rakhine population continue to face significant challenges, leaving the prospects for peace and human rights improvements in the region uncertain. As Rights Defenders, we believe that the international community should raise a stronger voice on this issue and take concrete steps.
